The Shape of Things: Geometric Tattoos

These awesome geometric tattoos will leave you needing new ink, and soon!
It’s funny, isn’t it? Most artists hate mathematic equations, but sacred geometry is where the two meet: math meets art. The beauty of this is that geometric tattoos can be small, minimal pieces or take up large swaths of skin like Nissaco’s bodysuits. Geometric tattoos have many subjects to draw upon for inspiration and aesthetic so it’s no wonder that artists continue to create incredible designs!
Sacred geometry is a favorite. The sacred symbols, meanings, and proportions behind these specific geometric tattoos has ancient roots. Plato spoke of these arrangements of shapes, lines and more as the work of God. Many philosophers and scientists of old felt that sacred geometry has its origins deep within nature and its organic beauty. This leads up to fractals: also a seriously cool geometric tattoo design. The dictionary defines fractals as “a curve or geometric figure, each part of which has the same statistical character as the whole. Fractals are useful in modeling structures (such as eroded coastlines or snowflakes) in which similar patterns recur at progressively smaller scales, and in describing partly random or chaotic phenomena such as crystal growth, fluid turbulence, and galaxy formation.” Pretty wild to wrap your mind around, these babies make insanely sick geometric tattoo designs…the Fractal Foundation simply states “A fractal is a never-ending pattern.” If blackwork and linework aren’t exactly your thing, maybe you’re more interested in abstract or colorful cubism. These art movements are also steeped in geometric principles. Abstract painters were interested in simplifying objects, landscapes..even people..into their most abstracted forms: shapes, lines and the like were of the utmost importance…same as in geometry!
Cubist painters were interested in this as well…they both used basic geometric shapes, spacial relationships, and planar mapping to create their works of art. So, okay, this is all the really intellectual hoo haw behind geometric tattoos…what it really comes down to is how incredible these gorgeous shapes and designs work with the human body, and under the hands of a truly great artist become impeccable designs that last a lifetime. We hope these artists and these tattoos inspire you as much as they did us.Geometric Tattoos
